Beyond the basics: We all know blocks store #bitcoin transactions, but what makes them truly unique?
1. Anatomy of a Block: 📑
Imagine a giant public ledger, like a secure book:
- Each page is a block, holding recent #transactions data (limited space available).
- This data includes details like who sent what amount of #Bitcoin to whom.
- The book also has a table of contents (block header) with #timestamps and other crucial information.
2. The Power of Immutability: 🔐
Once added, a page (block) becomes unchangeable due to a unique cryptographic fingerprint (hash).
This #hash is like a fingerprint, it is an outcome dependent on the page’s content and the fingerprint of the previous page.
These fingerprints link the pages together in a chronological chain, making it impossible to tamper with any page without breaking the chain and being easily detected.
3. The Block Size Debate: 💾
Limited Space: Each page (block) has a fixed size, similar to a limited number of lines on a page, to ensure efficient processing. However, a full page can lead to delays and higher fees, just like a long line at the copier.
There have been several community led attempts to increase the block size.
a. #BIP101 (not implemented): Proposed increasing the page size for more transactions, but raised concerns about network efficiency.
b. #SegWit: A sophisticated solution that streamlines data storage within pages, allowing for more transactions without compromising security.
